Three people is the whole practice. Nobody here is a rotating locum, nobody is going to hand you to a colleague halfway through a course of treatment, and whoever treats you will remember you without reading the notes first.

Dr Callum Rees

Principal dentist · GDC 118342

Callum qualified at Sheffield in 2004 and bought this practice from its retiring owner in 2016. He does most of the root canals and most of the surgical extractions, and he is the one who will tell you a tooth is not worth saving when three other people have quoted you for saving it. He grew up in Oldham, cycles in badly, and keeps a jar of the strange things he has removed from children, which he will show you if you ask.

If you are nervous

Callum works slowly and narrates as he goes. If you want a running commentary on what is happening, ask him for it — silence makes some people worse.

Dr Amelia Chen

Dentist · GDC 264910

Amelia joined in 2021 from a mixed NHS practice in Stockport and does the bulk of our fillings, crowns and children’s appointments. She has a particular interest in treating people who have not been to a dentist in a long time, which is a polite way of saying she does not react to anything she finds. She reads crime novels and is unreasonably competitive at the pub quiz two doors down.

Nisha Patel

Dental hygienist · GDC 209117

Nisha has been a hygienist for eleven years, the last six here. She does the cleaning, the gum treatment and the part where somebody finally explains interdental brushes in a way that makes sense. She is direct about what is going wrong and specific about how to fix it, and she will not lecture you about flossing you were never going to do.

If you are nervous

Nisha works with a hand signal by default rather than as a special arrangement, and will use numbing gel for a routine clean if cold sets your teeth off.

Nobody here reacts to what they find

The thing people are most frightened of is not the drill. It is being judged — the sharp intake of breath, the comment about how long it has been, the look between dentist and nurse.

That does not happen here, and not because we are being kind about it. After twenty years you genuinely stop registering it. A mouth that has been avoided for a decade is the most ordinary thing in this building.
